Siri is a very young German Shepherd bitch, she turned one year old on 21st of June. It seems that her whole life is still ahead. She enjoyed life, had fun and was happy running around in the yard, nestling up to her family, playing with the other dogs and no-one could have imagined that one day all this will suddenly come to an end.
One day she started limping with her right back paw and draging it a bit. The next day we rushed to the Kriaučeliūnas vet clinic in Kaunas. A lot of examinations were made there but none revealed the true cause of these symptoms. The vets suspected that it might be babesiosis, injected medication against it and prescribed symptomatic treatment, however, it was ineffective. On the contrary, Siri‘s health got even worse - the illness continued to develop. The legs just couldn‘t withstand the weight of dog anymore. Her behind is completely sessile and crouched to the ground, she can only move herself with her front legs. Siri couldn‘t hold her urine anymore, therefore her fur started reeking, wounds on the thighs appeared so I had to cut the fur from her thighs and partially – from tai. We‘ve discussed the further treatment with the vets but the doctor who was healing Siri went on vacation, therefore we were sent to his collegue. I have also spoken to the other vets, showed them the X-ray pictures and the medical examination results but nobody managed to find out what the real cause of this illness is. Right now we are continuing the symptomatic treatment and Siri is getting a little better. She now manages to hold urine again and is raising her behind from the ground but with strength of her front legs only. I carry her to the yard
two times daily where she can pee and poo, but we still have to hold her during this because otherwise she would tumble down. I massage her legs and rub her wounds with medication. Siri wants to get well very much, she eats all the pills that I give her straight from the hand, even those that taste disgusting, and silently suffers daily syringe injections.
The sensitivity hasn‘t gone from her legs or tail, neither has the muscle tone, therefore the vets say that the recovery prognosis is satisfactory, however, a lot of patience, procedures and, of course, money, will be needed... And those last ones have a feature of running out quickly. I have run out of mine after driving to the vets constantly, moreover, I have got into debt for buying medicine and paying for some examinations, but not everything can be done on loan. The vet mentioned it would be great to do a magnetic resonance imaging examination, and this would cost 400Lt + the travel price. I can‘t look into Siri‘s eyes when she is suffering and I must do everything that is possible just to help her to get well. I can‘t resolve to say goodbye to her because there still is some hope to recover. Therefore I dare to appeal to all the good people: would you be kind and donate at least a little sum of money? I dare to hope that perhaps we would succeed in collecting the proper amount of money for the medical examinations and further treatment that is needed. I am no more capable of healing her at my own expense because of financial problems, however, I cannot give up trying to save Siri. She has a trust in me, looks at me with a hope in her eyes and licks my hands everytime I come close to her. She expects my help, after all, Siri is so young, she still has a lot of years and happy days waiting ahead...
